Saturday Morning Snack

.

  1. Scientists are saying they believe that a problem (rubble from the earthquake) can be used as a solution, by recycling the concrete. **Interesting Note: Concrete from the rubble was taken to a lab and studies show the average Haitian concrete that was used had an average compressive strength of 1,300 pounds/ square inch. U.S. standards require a minimum of 3,000 pounds/ square inch.
  2. While acknowledging a host of problems plague Haiti, this NPR article points out some of the gains Haitians have made in recent decades, despite economic and political instability.
  3. Because of unresolved issues stemming from a recount of the election votes in November, the runoff for President of Haiti will not take place on January 16, but will be postponed to a later date. The current president’s term ends Feb 7.
  4. For those of you who continue hearing references to the cholera outbreak in Haiti, but are confused about what exactly cholera is, you can end your confusion here.
  5. This is not Cazale, but here are some beautiful pictures that are typical of rural Haiti, set to Haitian music.
  6. WHO says they will begin vaccinations for Cholera in Haiti in April. There will only be about 400,000 vaccines for nearly 10,000,000 people. They are looking for ways to shrink this margin.
  7. Haiti’s version of Cool Runnings. A Haitian in an international snow skiing competition.
  8. A fun video of an experiment, giving camera’s to teenagers in Haiti as asking them to document their lives for two weeks.

One last favor. For those of you who have labored alongside of us in Cazale and have visited our facilities here in Haiti, would you consider writing a short review of our organization?

Thank you for your time.

Thanks, CZ. This ‘snack’ has filled me with reminders of the beauty, hope, daring, and needs that make Haiti one of my favorite places. The video with photos and music? Made me long to be back in Cazale!
