Updates on Nerline and Fanise

Two weeks ago, Lori shared the incredible story of Nerline.  We have good news to report about this sweet child.  She has gained two pounds and is eating well enough to have had her NG tube removed last week.  The swelling in her eyes is going down, and she can now open them.  A few days ago, the nannies in the ICU believed she was able to detect the difference between light and dark with her healing eyes.  This was a great sign of improvement!

To our amazement, and solid confirmation that prayer works, Nerline is regaining her vision!  Just a couple of days ago, she began looking at people entering the room, tracking them with her eyes.  She will make eye contact when spoken to.  Now, granted, it takes great effort for her to open her eyes for any length of time, but this child IS NOT BLIND!  We have tremendous hope that her healing will continue and God will restore her vision.

So please continue to pray for this Jesus-loving child.  She hasn’t said much more than a mumble in quite some time, but she still dances.  Thank you, Lord, for the gift of music and for the comfort it gives Nerline!

We introduced you to Fanise last week, and are excited to tell you about her progress.  She now weighs 19 pounds, which means she has gained a solid two pounds of healthy weight in just one week.  Fanise is eating well and it is evident that the Medika Mamba is working to restore her frail body.  Her legs have completely healed from the openings that were draining water.  Her horrible fungal infection is gone.  But this little girl has a lot of emotional healing left to do.

When Fanise first came to RHFH, she was angry and confused.  She cried for her momma, even though her momma’s neglect was largely to blame for her painful condition.  Fanise refused to be consoled, swatting away our gentle touches and avoiding all eye contact with us.  We talked to her and continued to love her, even though she made every effort to reject us.

Slowly, Fanise accepted us.  As the swelling in her body decreased, her agitation decreased as well.  A week ago this little girl, as tough as she had tried to be, surrendered to love.  Remarkably, she welcomed affection with open arms.  A timid smile and a faint giggle even emerged after some time of being kissed on and having her armpits tickled.  However, she is still very guarded.  Fanise now remains silent, but her dark brown eyes speak volumes of the hurt she feels inside.

Please continue to pray for not only the restoration of Fanise’s physical health, but that her heart heals as well.  May she know the love of Jesus in the depths of her aching, precious heart.
