Cholera house and semi container needs

The cholera house has been up higher in numbers the last few nights.  We stayed at around 80+ for several days and then went up to 101 and tonight we are at 108.  We sent many people home to continue drinking ORS at their homes. This group of people were not showing signs of bad diar and vomiting.  We told them to return if they got worse during the night.  By the grace of God our supplies are holding up.  That in itself is a miracle.  All dad and Enoch has been doing is hauling supplies.  Many trips each day.  Dad can tell you where every single bump is at on our dirt road.  But we continue….

There is a 1/2 of a container that is going to be send from MN for RHFH.  Debbie W & Lorie G. are working hard to collect, organize and get this project done.  You can check out the blog post here about that project and a need list of items.  You can contact Debbie at debra_woodward@msn.com if you have questions or donations.  Debbie has also registered us at Target for the kids in the RC.  It is located under  baby registries under the name Debbie Woodward.  Again if you have questions contact her or leave a comment on the blog and she or one of us will get back with you.

We have a lot needs right now.  Many are being met by several organizations here in Haiti.  The items we are low on right now that we need to purchase are

  • kids diapers (.50 cents a piece) We are averaging around 200 diapers a day
  • Adult diapers ($1.00 a piece) We are averaging around 100 per day (some patients do not need them)
  • bleach ($5.00 a gallon) We average 4 gallons a day
  • paper towels ($1.25 a roll) We average 30 rolls a day
  • toilet paper ($.60 cents a roll) We average 40 rolls a day
  • sugar ($63.69 1 large sack) use for homemade ORS-We average 1 bag per week
  • salt-(  $.36 cents per bag) used for homemade ORS- We average 4 small bags a day
  • bottled lime juice ($3.75 per bottle) used for homemade ORS- We average 1 bottle a day
  • trash bags ( $.50 a piece) We 15 bags a day
  • laundry soap ($22.93 for a large bag) We average 1.5 bags per week
  • HTH-powdered bleach ($68 a bucket) We average 1/2 bucket a week

If I did the math right that is $2191.40 a week (or $8765.64 per month) that we need for the basic items that we have to have.  These item are those we buy not donated.  The payroll for 1 month is currently at $5350.00 and will go up with new staff being hired as the numbers increase.

These above items are some of the most pressing items that we need to purchase here in Haiti that we use the most off.  As I said before many of the other needs like meds, IV fluids, sheets, drapes, buckets, chux, oral ORS in bottles, basins etc are coming in from other places.  So we are so thankful for that.

This does not include IV tubing, angiocaths, gloves, alcohol pads, bandaids, tape, gauze, razors, meds, syringes, water, water jugs, water containers, tarps, pillows, pillow cases, chairs, cots, flashlights, lanterns, scissors, stretchers, body bags, IV hooks, IV poles, tables, trashcans, etc I think you get the picture. I cannot easily price all these items tonight.

The diapers have been a great help to the kids at the cholera house.  It really helps to keep the poo contained to the diapers and not all over another child or all over the cots.  Many families have several children there at once.

Lori and Caroline are working on a four day teaching with people from different areas in our sections.  The government is going to be paying them to have small ORS stations in their villages, do education, deal with a death from cholera, disinfect a house for a cholera patient and many other things.  Lori and Caroline are educating them and answering questions and getting them prepared.  This is taking a big chunk out of our already busy schedule, but in the long run it should help us.  Here is the students in class going over material today.

So I am putting all this out there so you maybe can get an idea of some numbers and figures of the items we are using.  We do NOT have extra funds for the cholera house.  We do NOT have a steady monthly amount coming in for this project.  We are totally 100% depending on God to provide each and every day for our needs.  We do not have time to even think about that anymore.  We know, that we know, that we know, that.we.know. that God is going to provide for these needs.  He has done it for the last 17 years.  So tonight I ask that you continue to pray for us and give if you can.  There is a paypal button in the upper right hand corner of the blog or send donations to Real Hope for Haiti/P.O. Box 23/Elwood, IN, 46036.  Questions info@realhopeforhaiti.org

This cute guy spend 4 days at the cholera house and was leaving to go home when I asked if I could take his picture.  I am sure that he could tell me many, many stories from his life.

Licia, please let everybody know that teams from Minnesota have graciously allowed us to start sending supplies with them each week. This means that we won’t have to wait to fill the container before we start getting the supplies to Real Hope For Haiti.

PLEASE consider partnering with Real Hope For Haiti to care for the people with cholera and to care for the children in the Rescue Center as well as those who come to the clinic. Look at either list OR — if you spot a good deal on the same supplies at another store or have them on hand, send them to:

    Debbie Woodward
    Northrup King Building
    Main Office
    1500 Jackson Street NE
    Minneapolis, MN 55413

We can send up to 10 suitcases on Monday, August 1st. We will start packing them with priority supplies this week and get them to the team this Friday. We will be able to repeat this in about a week if needed.

THANK YOU to everyone who is blessing the Haitian people and the Real Hope For Haiti ministry and staff.

Can you let me know what would be most helpful at the moment? A donation directly to RHFH or to check some things off some of the registries?

  3. Debbie Woodward says

    Kristen,

Both are very helpful, but I know that the direct donation also allows them to pay for the staff to care for all the people and to get supplies until we can smooth it out. If you donate money today, they will be able to use it today and we will work on get supplies down to Haiti over the next several months.

I would donate the money if possible.

That being said — THANK YOU to everyone who has purchased supplies. We are starting to get many more of the supplies in now and we will be packing to start sending them to Haiti this Monday and will continue sending supplies to Haiti nearly every week. This will save an abundance of time and it can also save quite a bit of money.

REALLY like the way things are starting to take shape and would love to send as many suitcases as possible down each week.

If anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at (612) 363-5612 or e-mail me at debra_woodward@msn.com

thank you, we’ll figure out an amount and send it within a day or two. It has been hard for me to know how to pray– these updates are so nice, even if it’s one sentence. Make sure Caroline knows how much we appreciate her blog posts, too.
